A Special Charity Project From Zoe’s Corner: The Side By Side Design 200 Cards Challenge

working together we can reach our goal!

working together side by side, we can reach our goal!

We were recently contacted by Lauren and Tami, of Side By Side Design, who are working on a special project to help us continue our Operation Smile outreach.  As they are about to reach their 200th blog post on Side By Side Design, they have set a goal of making 200 handmade cards specifically for Operation Smile.  They need your help, though.  If you would like to assist them in reaching this goal (or exceeding it), please check out their latest blog post for the information.

We are always grateful for any cards or stamps sent our way as it makes it so much easier to forward them to the sick kids immediately upon request.  We would also love to team up with our local Children’s Hospital to get these cards to the children as they are admitted to the pediatric ward.  200 cards will make so many families happier as they are going through a tough time so please help us spread the word about this fantastic and easy charitable opportunity.

For more information regarding the Side By Side card challenge or Operation Smile in general, you can email either Tami and Lauren at sidebyside.design@yahoo.com or us at mikeyandzoe@comcast.net.

Thank you in advance for helping these ladies (and us!) on such an important endeavor.

Less Than One Week Left!

Our raffle to raise money for the babies in the NICU at TMH is still running through this Saturday!  We have had several generous friends buy tickets for this great cause, but we could still use your help!  $1 is all it takes – you’d be surprised how quickly those dollars add up!  And, if you don’t know someone who could use the prize should you win it, you can choose to donate the cake to a family at the NICU!  It’s another wonderful way to contribute!

Please take the time to read the previous blogs about the Milk Warmer Project and the diaper cake raffle for the NICU right now and help us donate as much as we can to the babies that need it most!

Buy your tickets securely here!

Featured Charity: TMH NICU Milk Warmer Project

Did you know that 1 in 10 babies born in the United States will be born prematurely?  That’s a startling fact and chances are that you or someone you know has been personally affected by the premature birth of a child.  That’s why having a great Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is so important to a hospital.  And, while having access to some of today’s most advanced medical technology is key, sometimes, it’s the “little” things that can make the difference.

Right now, the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Foundation is raising funds for their NICU Milk Warmer and Breast-Feeding Education Program which will provide top quality milk warmers for the NICU, as well as provide breast-feeding education for the parents and families of premature babies.  You may not realize it, but being able to warm milk to the precise temperature that is needed to provide the best nutrients available to premies is not as easy or as quick as it may sound.

Milk warmers provide gradual, controlled warming for each NICU baby’s feeding, which results in enhanced tolerance and, in turn, consumption of  much-needed additional calories.  These nutritional warmers ensure preservation of the immunological and nutritional properties of breast milk   and allow for consistent temperatures of the milk fed to critically ill babies in order to increase blood flow and oxygen delivery for faster weight gain and optimum recovery.  Isn’t that amazing?!

You can make a difference in hundreds of lives each year by donating funds to the NICU Milk Warmer Project, allowing TMH to purchase these much-needed items as well as provide new parents with the necessary information to help their premature babies grow and thrive, thus allowing for a quicker discharge from the NICU.

Any donations can be sent to the TMH Foundation, 1331 East Sixth Avenue, Tallahassee, FL 32303 or you can make a secure online donation by clicking on this link, selecting “other” as the gift designation and entering NICU Milk Warmers in the space provided.

Remember that any gift, no matter how big or how small the amount, can help save the life of a precious baby!  Won’t you lend a helping hand?  And, please, help us spread the word about this worthwhile cause!

For more information on how you can help, please contact Judi Taber, Annual Giving Officer, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Foundation, at (850) 431-5904 or Judi.Taber@tmh.org.

Featured Charity: Give Kids The World

Our next featured charity is Give Kids the World (a special thanks to Lori from disneygals.com for sharing this wonderful charitable/volunteer opportunity with us)!

Give Kids The World (GKTW) exists to fulfill the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.  These children and their families come from around the world to stay at this whimsical 70-acre resort and enjoy a magical, memorable cost-free visit to Walt Disney World and other Orlando area attractions.  And you can help make it possible!  From donating money or specific items on their wishlist, to volunteering your time and efforts at a GKTW location like Lori did, you can make a difference in the life of a sick child!

Please take a moment to check out the websites of both GKTW and Disney Gals for more information on how you can help and take the time to spread the word about this worthwhile cause!

Another Idea From Zoe’s Corner + Featured Charity: Alex’s Lemonade Stand!

Attention Parents! Here’s another way to have free fun with your children while helping to make a contribution to a great charity!

This Saturday, February 4th, from 12-2 pm, you can go to your local ToysRUs store and build a free LEGO Friends Lemonade Stand to take home as part of your child’s personal LEGO collection.

What a Fun Edition to Your Own Lego Collection!

For each stand built, the LEGO Group will donate $1 (up to $10,000) to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a great organization helping in the fight against childhood cancer.

ALSF was founded by Alexandra “Alex” Scott, a 4-year-old girl who was diagnosed with childhood cancer.  When she passed away at the age of 8, her lemonade stand fundraisers (and those by others inspired by her determination) had already raised more than $1 million for cancer research!  Since 2005, her parents have carried on with Alex’s fundraising efforts in memory of their brave and amazing daughter while countless others around the nation continue to lend their support to this worthy cause.

So, this weekend, head on over to ToysRUs and help support ALSF by making your own lemonade stand.  It’s charity and fun mixed into one day!  For more information about this event, please visit www.alexslemonadestand.org.

**If you know of a free/inexpensive/easy way to help others or a specific charity, please let us know so we can spread the word!  We’re always on the lookout for new ways to help!**

This Week’s Featured Child: Bella!

Beautiful Bella

This week’s featured child is 8-year-old, Bella Rodriguez-Torres.

In 2007, Bella was diagnosed with Stage 4 Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma.   She was treated and went into remission, only to relapse in 2009 when doctors found a tumor on her brain.  Luckily, with treatment, she again went into remission.

Unfortunately, this fall, doctors found another tumor on her ovary, which has since been removed, but she is still receiving treatments.  Bella has proven numerous times that she is a fighter and she’s doing it one more time.

Please pray for brave Bella and her family as they battle this newest form of cancer.  And, take the time to visit her Facebook Page and website to say hello and to learn more about this lovely little lady and her progress.

Bella will be turning 9 on December 12th and you can help her celebrate by sending her a cheery birthday card, via her aunt!

This Week’s Feature: Kids Over Kancer!

This week’s featured charity is Kids Over Kancer (K.O.K)!  K.O.K. was founded in October of this year by 20-year-old Gabriela Lopez of Miami, Florida.  She was inspired to start this new charity in honor of little Mackenzie Gonzalez, a brave cancer warrior who earned her angel wings one year ago.

A direct goal of Kids Over Kancer is to raise awareness for those fighting childhood cancer.  In addition to advocating on behalf of the cancer patients, K.O.K. also works to bring smiles and hope to the children and their families.

As K.O.K. is a new charity, currently in the process of obtaining its 501(c)(3) status, they need your help!  Please take the time to visit their Facebook and Squidoo pages and learn more about the individual children they are promoting and what you can do to help.  You can also follow this organization on Twitter!

The more information the world has, the closer we come to funding and finding a cure for childhood cancer!  Less than 2% of all cancer funding goes to this area and that is unacceptable!  Help Kids Over Kancer spread the word today!

**If you know a child or charity that would like to be featured, please let us know at mikeyandzoe@comcast.net or on our Facebook page**
