Zoe’s Corner – Valentines for the Hospitalized

valentinesIt has been a while since we have been able to do any projects or update you on ways you can help, but, seeing as though Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and we got such a great response to our Valentine’s Day challenge last year, I thought I would share what we are doing this year and hopefully inspire you to do the same!

36 bags so far!

36 bags so far!

To bring smiles to kids in the Pediatrics Unit of our local hospital, Mikey’s Helping Place (via our 6-year-old, Zoe) is providing small goodie bags with personalized Valentine’s inside.  Zoe included handmade rainbow loom bracelets in most of the bags and also “sold” special order bracelets to my husband’s sweet co-workers in order to purchase extra treats for the bags.  So far, we have been able to provide 18 girl bags and 18 boy bags on A VERY SIMPLE BUDGET!  It’s amazing what a few dollars can do, especially when funds are tight!

Instead of giving specific addresses this year, I thought we would challenge our readers and supporters to join with us in donating Valentines or toys or any small gifts that you can put together to your local hospital.

Hospitals are always in need of little gifts to give to children for when they have procedures done, when they are bored, when they are scared, etc.  No gift is too small!  Even giving a new box of unused Valentines for a child to hand out to the nursing staff is a great idea and can be done for just $1.00 a box at many stores!

Here’s hoping all of our friends are inspired to get involved this year in any way that you can, be it Valentine’s Day or just any old Tuesday!

And please share your projects with us so that you can also inspire others!  We love to shine a spotlight on others who are doing great charity work!

Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day 2014!

Zoe’s Corner – Chick Fil A Book Drive

kids-sitting-on-booksThis post is specifically for our Tallahassee readers, but it is an idea for everyone!

This evening, April 23, from 5:30-8pm, the Chick-Fil-A (CFA) on Capital Circle NE will be holding a book drive to benefit the Children’s Home Society (CHS).  CHS was the first charity we had a fundraiser for so it holds a special place in our hearts and it is a great organization to support.

Families are asked to bring in a new or gently used children’s book to help stock the organization’s “Book Nook” which allows every child involved with CHS to have access to his/her choice of a book which he/she will be able to keep.

This particular Chick-Fil-A will also be having other family activities for donors to participate in during the book drive, so if you are able, please visit CFA on Capital Circle NE and drop off a book for the kids!

If you are not in the Tallahassee area, you can still donate new or gently used books (and many other items) to your local Children’s Home!  These types of organizations can always use donations from the community to help the children in your area.

**If you know of a free/inexpensive/easy way to help others or a specific charity, please let us know so we can spread the word!  We’re always on the lookout for new ways to help!**

Thank You Side By Side Design!

thanksWe would like to recognize Tami, Lauren, and friends of Side By Side Design (you may remember them from our post about the Side By Side Card Challenge) for the shipment of beautiful, handmade birthday cards for critically ill and hospitalized children. Each card sent is completely unique and I know they will be truly appreciated by each child that receives one.

Make Kiera Smile!

One of our special ‘Operation Smile’ children has had to be admitted to the hospital and is spending her Easter there.  If you have a chance, please take the time to send Kiera a special message on her Hope For Kiera Facebook page so she knows that we are all thinking about her during this time!

You can also send her a cheery card in the mail so she is greeted with smiles when she goes home:

Hope for Kiera, 4 years old (ALL) – 14 B Lloshire Path, Palm Coast, FL 32164.

Thank you in advance for your participation!  eater

An Easter Idea From Zoe’s Corner

Be a shining star to a sick child

Be a shining star to a sick child

This year there will be many children hospitalized over the Easter holiday.  If you could help make their day a little bit brighter, wouldn’t you do it?

Right now, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is offering a free way to do just that!  All you have to do is go the St. Jude website (click on this link) and customize a virtual Easter egg with a special message for the patients there!  It only takes a few seconds of your time, but this small act can make a big difference in the life of a sick child and his/her family.

And, if you feel so compelled, there is also a link for donations.  St. Jude is a wonderful organization that saves so many lives each year and is the perfect place to donate to if you are looking to give a little more hope to the thousands of children diagnosed with cancer each year, many of whom would not be able to afford the necessary care without the facilities at St. Jude.st. jude

Won’t you join us in creating an egg and spreading a little holiday cheer?  And, pass on this information to others who might like to participate.  Together, we can make a difference!

A Special Charity Project From Zoe’s Corner: The Side By Side Design 200 Cards Challenge

working together we can reach our goal!

working together side by side, we can reach our goal!

We were recently contacted by Lauren and Tami, of Side By Side Design, who are working on a special project to help us continue our Operation Smile outreach.  As they are about to reach their 200th blog post on Side By Side Design, they have set a goal of making 200 handmade cards specifically for Operation Smile.  They need your help, though.  If you would like to assist them in reaching this goal (or exceeding it), please check out their latest blog post for the information.

The lovely ladies at Side By Side Design

The lovely ladies at Side By Side Design

We are always grateful for any cards or stamps sent our way as it makes it so much easier to forward them to the sick kids immediately upon request.  We would also love to team up with our local Children’s Hospital to get these cards to the children as they are admitted to the pediatric ward.  200 cards will make so many families happier as they are going through a tough time so please help us spread the word about this fantastic and easy charitable opportunity.

For more information regarding the Side By Side card challenge or Operation Smile in general, you can email either Tami and Lauren at sidebyside.design@yahoo.com or us at mikeyandzoe@comcast.net.

Thank you in advance for helping these ladies (and us!) on such an important endeavor.

The Sunshine Award

sunshine-awardValerie at Atlantamomofthree nominated this blog for the Sunshine Award.  As this blog originated from the mind of my older son (and many of the projects have been continued on by my daughter), I thought it would be appropriate for them to answer the questions so you can learn a little more about the 5 & 7-year-old minds behind Mikey’s Helping Place.  Thanks, Valerie, for the nomination! And thanks to all of our readers for helping us spread the sunshine! 🙂
