This Week’s Feature: Kids Over Kancer!

This week’s featured charity is Kids Over Kancer (K.O.K)!  K.O.K. was founded in October of this year by 20-year-old Gabriela Lopez of Miami, Florida.  She was inspired to start this new charity in honor of little Mackenzie Gonzalez, a brave cancer warrior who earned her angel wings one year ago.

A direct goal of Kids Over Kancer is to raise awareness for those fighting childhood cancer.  In addition to advocating on behalf of the cancer patients, K.O.K. also works to bring smiles and hope to the children and their families.

As K.O.K. is a new charity, currently in the process of obtaining its 501(c)(3) status, they need your help!  Please take the time to visit their Facebook and Squidoo pages and learn more about the individual children they are promoting and what you can do to help.  You can also follow this organization on Twitter!

The more information the world has, the closer we come to funding and finding a cure for childhood cancer!  Less than 2% of all cancer funding goes to this area and that is unacceptable!  Help Kids Over Kancer spread the word today!

Zoe’s Corner

Here’s a charitable HOLIDAY idea from Zoe’s Corner!

Who out there loves Boston Market?  I know my family does!  Did you know that every year during the holiday season, they offer a coupon book for $1, with the proceeds of the sales going to their chosen charity, “Give Kids the World” (GKTW)? This specific charity has been in operation out of Kissimmee, Florida for 24 years and provides families of children with life-threatening illnesses a week-long, cost-free (not to mention worry-free) vacation of a lifetime!

In addition to giving money for the vacations, Boston Market also operates Katie’s Kitchen (named after a former GKTW child) in the GKTW Village, providing all of the delicious, healthy, cost-free meals for the families.  Many of its employees also volunteer their time to help make everything possible.

So, this holiday season when you head over to Boston Market to enjoy a tasty meal, be sure to pick up your $1 coupon booklet!  You’ll be able to save money for yourself and you’ll be helping a deserving family at the same time!

**If you know of a free/inexpensive/easy way to help others or a specific charity, please let us know so we can spread the word!  We’re always on the lookout for new ways to help!**

This Week’s Feature: Cards for Kids

This week, we wanted to share with you a special charity called, “Cards for Kids”. This charity was started by Emersyn Harris, a sweet young lady who spends her free time making cards and gift bags for sick children.  She was inspired to do this by watching the Ellen Show and it is her dream to one day meet Ellen!

Emersyn and one of her beautiful handmade cards

You can see all of Emersyn’s cards and charitable works, including her ongoing collection of Silly Socks for the sick children at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, on her Facebook Page and her blog http://emersynscrafts.blogspot.com/.  She updates her Facebook Page each day so that anyone who follows her can know if there is a child that could use extra thoughts and prayers, as well as cards.  We have learned about several of our Operation Smile children from Emersyn!

You can help Emersyn bring a smile to a child by sending her craft supplies, silly socks, backpacks, or other little items for her charitable gifts.  She is such an inspiration, with amazing artistic talents and a heart of gold.   Much like her idol, Ellen, we should all take note of how every small act of kindness can be multiplied when others follow suit!

To learn what items Emersyn needs and where to send them, you can contact her mother at emersyn_mom@yahoo.com.  Please help us spread the word about Emersyn by liking her Facebook Page and leaving a note on the Ellen Website  stating how much Emersyn would love to meet her!

This Week’s Feature: Butterflies for Brandi

Butterflies for Brandi

We have mentioned Butterflies for Brandi in the past as a group that helps sick children, but this week we wanted to give a little more detail about the wonderful work they are doing in the Memphis area, especially for the families of the sick children being treated at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The Butterflies for Brandi charity was founded by the family of little Brandi who lost her fight with cancer in 2002.   They were so inspired and grateful for the people who surrounded them with support during that time that they wanted to honor sweet Brandi’s memory by doing the same for others that are going through similar situations.

What started as a way to deliver toys and gifts to the children fighting cancer at St. Jude quickly became a ministry for the families of those sick children.  Many of the families are staying nearby in either the Ronald McDonald House or Target House and have very little resources available to them.  Leading the ministry is Rena Mangum.  With each visit to St. Jude or one of the housing locations, she meets new families in need and she does everything she can to get donations of even the simplest household items to them while they endure the pain of having a critically ill child.

Please take the time to visit the Butterflies for Brandi Facebook page to see how you can help!  You can send donations of toiletries, toys, clothing, non-perishable food, etc., to Rena Mangum at 1764 Sixth Crompton Sq A, Memphis, TN 38134.  Everything will be personally delivered to the families in need.  You can also purchase a Butterflies for Brandi bracelet as part of their fundraising efforts (wristbands are $5.00 and custom-made paracord bracelets are $10.00).

Help us keep spreading the word about Butterflies for Brandi and all of our feature kids and charities!

We Love Businesses That Help Children!

Each day Mikey’s Helping Place grows and each day we learn about other businesses and charities that are doing their part to help sick children too.  In addition to our first featured charity, Hayley’s Angels, here are a few others we have discovered that are definitely worth promoting!

  • Joy Jars – This charitable organization was founded by 12-year-old Jessie Rees, who is currently battling a brain tumor (she is also one of the children who will be on our Operation Smile update list for those of you who might be interested in sending her a card).  For a small fee, you can order a customized ‘Joy Jar’ from Jessie which includes a t-shirt, wristband, notecard and jar, which you can then fill with anything you want and pass on to a friend or sick child to make him smile.  You can also sponsor a sick child by having a ‘Joy Jar’ sent on your behalf; or, if you know a sick child that would appreciate a joy jar, Jessie has provided a way to request that one be sent to him/her, via a sponsor.  The Joy Jar purchases are also tax-deductible!  What an amazing heart this young lady has to be thinking of so many others all while battling a serious illness herself.  Make sure to check out Joy Jars and Jessie’s Facebook page for more information!
  • Kiss the Toad Creations – This business began with a mom creating a cape as a way to give her autistic son greater self-esteem and quickly grew from there.   Now you can order personalized superhero capes for any child.  What makes this particular business special is the work they do with Battle 4 a cure, a non-profit organization for cancer research.  For a reduced fee, you can send a cape to a child with cancer and learn more about that child’s progress along the way.  What a wonderful way to brighten a sick child’s day!  You can click on the link above for the website or go to their Facebook page for more information.
  • Emmy’s Got Style – Much like Kiss the Toad Creations, this business was inspired by a mother with a sick child.  She started by making a stylish and completely functional hospital gown for her young daughter, Emmy, who was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia and has had to endure numerous hospital stays.  She then continued taking orders for gowns for other children who remain in the hospital with life-threatening diseases.  You can purchase a gown for someone you know or donate a gown to a deserving child of their choice.  A portion of all proceeds also benefits Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, which has played such an important role in Emmy’s life.  Please take the time to learn more about Emmy’s Got Style and beautiful little Emmy by visiting their website or Facebook page.
  • Butterflies for BrandiThis charity was founded by the family of little Brandi who lost her fight with cancer.  Right now they are selling wristbands to raise money for their cause and proceeds will go toward sending toys to children with cancer.  What a precious way to honor the memory of a beautiful little girl.  Please take the time to check out the Butterflies for Brandi Facebook page to see how you can help!

These are merely a few businesses/charities which we have encountered, helping to provide easy ways to help sick children.  What a blessing each one is to their community.  Please pass on these wonderful ideas to others!

And, don’t forget about continuing to spread the word about Operation Smile and our own toy drive for the Pediatrics Department at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital!  In every case, every little bit helps!
